Charles Solomon
Charles Solomon is an internationally respected animation critic and historian. Among his published books are “Enchanted Drawings: The History of Animation,” and “The Walt Disney That Never Was.” For Toonfest audiences Solomon will explain the wiles, wills and attraction of Walt Disney film heroines. Solomon has written about cartoon animation for “Rolling Stone” and “The Manchester Guardian,” among others, and lectured on the subject at U.C.L.A., School of Visual Arts, Walt Disney Studios and DreamWorks Feature Animation. Here, Charles is showing us a VERY old cartoon to show the progression the crew made with drawing better female characters. At the time, nobody animated very realistic female stars. Betty Boop was the only realistic female cartoon out there, which is why Walt hired the guy who drew her to help. In Goddess Of Spring, her arms are too rubbery. The next cartoon he showed featured a gingerbread woman, which was much better animated. Then he showed the dancing scene from Snow White. All the practice with female characters was meant as training and testing for the movie.
